In memory of our taxi driver, Zakhariah Daraghmeh (37), shot dead by Zionists at the Ba`adan checkpoint east of Nablus - 4th May 2006.
The articles and news items listed below differ in their description of the events that led to Zakhariah being shot - what ever the case, he is dead. A taxi driver for 15 years he visited this checkpoint many times a day looking for customers. To suggest he was in forbidden zone is nonesense. This man knew the area well. Palestinian taxi drivers are a competent lot, always seeming to find a way around roadblocks, blocked roads and forbidden areas. Zakaria was an old school friend of Fatih who so kindly took us around the West Bank and Jordan Valley. He told us that he often rang Zakaria when he needed a taxi to pick him up at night. Of 13 students who were in Fatih’s class when he was a school, four have now been killed by the Israeli Army. As Fatih says “This is the occupation”. He leaves a wife and five children (4 girls and a boy) from 1 1/2 to 11 years old. Haaretz - article about the killing / The Guardian / Albawaba / Tiscali News / Swiss / Info.www.aljazeera.net / Irna.ir (Islamic news) / Saudi News Agency / arabwomanprogressivevoice.blogspot Below are some of the pictures we all took of Zakariah as we travelled around the West Bank. Zakariah Daraghmeh. The Apartheid wall is to his left in the distance. Zakariah taking us around an olive farm divided by the wall. Fixing a puncture. The roads in Palestinian areas are very rough and simple. An unexpected blocked road. The occupation forces often do this in a blatant attempt to disrupt Palestinian economic and social life. Zakariah knew another way, so we reached our destination without too much delay. Visiting the oldest house in Tubas at the end of a tiring day. Zakariah left a wife and five children IDF troops kill Palestinian taxi driver near Nablus checkpoint Israel Defense Forces troops shot and killed a Palestinian taxi driver in the West Bank on Thursday, Palestinian medics and witnesses said. IDF troops opened fire on Zakhariah Daraghmeh, 37, at the Ba`adan checkpoint east of Nablus after he advanced into a forbidden zone in order to pick up passengers. Palestinians said Daraghmeh was trying to reach his village of Toubas, close to Nablus, via an unpaved road. He was hit in the chest and later died of his wounds. An IDF source said initial findings into the incident showed Darghmeh had walked on foot with another Palestinian away from the road, which was closed. The source said the two began to run away when they saw Israeli soldiers, who then called on the Palestinians to stop. `The Palestinians stopped and turned around. One of them was identified trying to draw a weapon and was shot,` the source said. `The other Palestinian escaped.` Daraghmeh worked as a taxi driver from Nablus. Drivers in the city tend to approach the checkpoint from an access road located to its east in order pick up Nablus-bound passengers. Palestinian sources said IDF soldiers ordinarily forbid drivers from approaching the checkpoint. Mounds of earth have also been placed around the site to block the way. Daraghmeh and other drivers approached the earthworks - designated by the IDF as a closed zone - and soldiers opened fire. The IDF closed the Ba`adan checkpoint to Palestinian traffic about a month ago following a suicide bombing attack at the Kedumim settlement. Military sources said Thursday evening that an initial inquiry into the incident revealed paratroopers spotted two Palestinians approaching the checkpoint on foot from the direction of Ein Bidan, a village located to the east. *** The soldiers opened fire at the two Palestinians. One was killed and the second fled the scene. It is still not clear whether or not the soldiers followed standard procedure for the arresting of suspects, which includes verbal warnings, shots in the air and then shots at the suspect`s legs. One account suggested a paratrooper believed one of the Palestinians pulled out a handgun. However, no handgun was found on the dead taxi driver`s body and he was not known to have any connections to terror organizations. IDF sources said the investigation into the incident will take several days. This was the second incident this week in which a Palestinian civilian was killed. A 41-year-old Palestinian woman from Tul Karm was killed when Duvdevan undercover troops opened fire on a house in which an Islamic Jihad member was hiding. The wanted militant, who lived in an apartment adjacent to the woman, later turned himself in. Earlier this week, IDF soldiers detained a 15-year-old Palestinian male who they claimed attempted to bypass the line of people waiting to be inspected at Hawara checkpoint. Shortly afterwards, an argument ensued and soldiers wrestled the youth to the ground and handcuffed him. The IDF later released the youth. In an later article they said this as well; "However, eyewitness Ahmed Quran said Daragmeh left his taxi and started to flee on foot when IDF soldiers approached in a jeep. The soldiers shot him as he ran, Quran said. A doctor at Rafadiya hospital in Nablus said Daraghmeh died from a gunshot wound in his back." Friday May 12, 2006. The Guardian The great catastrophe Monday marks the 58th anniversary of the founding of Israel in 1948 - and the expulsion of Palestinians from their land. With millions still living under occupation or in exile, what Palestinians call their 'nakba' remains at the heart of their national identity, argues Karma Nabulsi In the last week of April 1948, combined Irgun-Haganah forces launched an offensive to drive the Palestinian people out of the beautiful port city of Jaffa, forcing the remaining inhabitants to flee by sea; many drowned in the process. My aunt Rose, a teenager at that time, survived the trip to begin her life in exile on the Lebanese coast. Each Palestinian refugee family grows up hearing again and again the stories of those final moments in Palestine, the decisions, the panic, as we live in the midst of their terrible consequences. Throughout 1948, Jewish forces expelled many thousands of Palestinians from their villages, towns and cities into Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Egypt and Iraq. Hundreds of thousands of others fled in fear. The purpose was to create a pure Jewish state, ethnically cleansed of the original inhabitants who had lived there for centuries. The creation of the state of Israel was the heart of this cataclysmic historical event for the Palestinians - the mass forced expulsion of a people; the more than 50 massacres carried out over the summer of 1948 by various armed Jewish forces; the demolition of villages to ensure the refugees could not return - all this is summed up in a single word for Palestinians: nakba, the catastophe. Al-Khalil, May 5, IRNA PALESTINIAN TAXI DRIVER KILLED IN WEST BANK CITY OF NABLUS NABLUS, MAY 4, SPA) -- A PALESTINIAN TAXI DRIVER WAS SHOT DEAD BY ISRAELI arabwomanprogressivevoice.blogspot.com Friday, May 05, 2006 Palestinian cab drivers are amazing. They go through hell to earn a living. Without them, life will pretty much stop. They are creative at finding alternative routes to avoid the checkpoints and to get people where they need to go: university, market, hospital. I always liked how they expressed solidarity with each other by flashing their headlights to oncoming cabs to warn them of a flying checkpoint awaiting to ambush them ahead. For three years, I used these cabs to commute daily between Ramallah and Nabuls. It is very likely that I was driven by Zakariya Daraghmeh, 37, who, yesterday, was shot on a checkpoint while trying to pick up some passengers to feed his children.
